Beloved, let us love one another, because love is from God; everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, for God is love. God’s love was revealed among us in this way: God sent his only Son into the world so that we might live through him. In this is love, not that we loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins. Beloved, since God loved us so much, we also ought to love one another. No one has ever seen God; if we love one another, God lives in us, and his love is perfected in us. By this we know that we abide in him and he in us, because he has given us of his Spirit.
I love this passage. It has that weird, yet delightfully comforting mystery of faith. I couldn't explain it more succinctly than this. I think it also shows the inherent good in people. Yes, yes, yes. I know I am an idealist. In this world, in the economy of the States right now, I know this is not a popular opinion. But I am. I believe that people are good. I know we are imperfect, but I know people are good. This is truth: verses 12 and 13: "No one has ever seen God; if we love one another, God lives in us, and his love is perfected in us. By this we know that we abide in him and he in us, because he has given us of his Spirit." That's nice to know. If we love one another, God lives in us. It's that simple. It's what I've been saying since I started this blog. God lives in us through love. Through the love we give and share with each other and the love that He shows us. Let us live in love.
Now living in love is not easy. It's very difficult to love the person who thought that they could whiz up the opposite lane whilst we all waited in traffic only to cut across and wedge himself between 2 cars at the front of the line. Now I followed him to see if he was perhaps going to the hospital to see his child, to get cancer treatment, to be a doctor and save someone's life (I live across the street from the hospital)- he wasn't. At that point I did get angry. What gave him that right?? And yet, I am called to love. I am called to be nice because God lives in me. It gets frustrating. But it's also nice sometimes. When I pay for someone else's coffee or baguette, say please and thank you, give money to a charity, or give my mom a back massage when her shoulders bother her.
But it's really not about me. Sure, the warm fuzzies are nice. It's for God and his people, not for me. "GOD IS LOVE." You know me. I'm not a doomsday kind of gal. Yes, The Almighty is all-ruling, all-powerful, and great in the magnificent and slightly scary way. But he's also quite fuzzy himself. He did sacrifice his son for us and that's a pretty big deal.
So what is the point? What am I trying to encourage you to do? Hummm. I encourage you to live in love. To try it for a day, a week, a month, a year, forever. It makes life so much more enjoyable. The almighty and powerful will appreciate our imperfect effort. Almost everything worthwhile in life is worth a try. It's scary and beautiful. It's hard to love all the time the ones we love. It's harder to love the people we don't want to love or are afraid to love. But please give it a shot- for me, for God, for the good of humanity. Just try.
